Brooklyn Law School

Message from the Interim Dean

Welcome to Brooklyn Law School. It is a tremendous honor and privilege to lead this great institution as Interim Dean during an exciting time for legal education.

Located in the heart of one of the world’s most diverse and dynamic urban areas, Brooklyn Law School offers an incomparable experience that places students at the center of federal and state courts; a booming high-tech and entrepreneurial community; federal, state, and New York City government offices; leading non-profit and legal assistance organizations; and one subway stop away from the global financial center in lower Manhattan.

Opportunities abound at Brooklyn Law School to explore all areas of the law and connect through our robust alumni network with leaders and practitioners across myriad fields. Our students study with a preeminent faculty of dedicated scholars, teachers, and mentors who are nationally recognized for excellence and devoted to developing lawyers ready for the challenges of their fields. The Law School’s renowned Clinical Program is innovative and its externship opportunities among the most extensive in the country, taking students beyond the classroom to have real-world impact, from startup companies to individuals seeking asylum in the United States.

On a personal note, as a longtime member of the Brooklyn Law School faculty, I take pride in our school’s distinctive history of opening doors to the legal profession for women, people of color, immigrants, and members of other underrepresented groups who in turn became trailblazers in the law and beyond. This legacy strongly resonates with my own scholarship, which focuses on immigration and refugee law. Over the years, I have witnessed the changing demographics in the United States and within the Law School’s student body, and I have relished the positive influence this has had on discussions in the classroom and on the careers of my former students. This is the Brooklyn Law School legacy in action: our students, faculty, and alumni engaging broadly and deeply in the intellectual and practical dimensions of the law.

Today, as social, political, and legal issues roil the nation, and, indeed, countries around the globe, lawyers are in the forefront of change. At Brooklyn Law School, our students and faculty are immersed in the critical conversations and scholarly work that will help shape law and policy and chart the way forward. As Interim Dean, I will work to ensure that this Law School continues to prepare our students for today’s challenges and for those on the horizon.
