U.S. Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer will be the commencement speaker at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 28, 2015.

Senator Schumer has represented New York since 1998. As the state’s senior senator and chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, Schumer’s accomplishments include sponsoring such notable legislation as the Brady Bill, the Violence Against Women Act, and the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, among others. Schumer has delivered more than $20 billion in aid to New York City since 9/11, and he is a tireless advocate of educational opportunity for all students. He previously served as a Congressman between 1981 and 1998, and was a three-term member of the New York State Assembly for Brooklyn’s 45th district, serving between 1975 and 1980.

“Born and raised in Brooklyn and a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Senator Schumer has been a great source of pride for this borough,” said President and Dean Nick Allard. “I can think of no one better to address the newly minted guardians of our democracy who we are proud to call the Brooklyn Law School Class of 2015.”

As the Law School’s commencement speaker, Senator Schumer will also receive an honorary degree, the highest degree conferred by Brooklyn Law School and given to only one recipient each year.
