    Professor Lisa Smith '78, a former prosecutor, was quoted in the recent New York Times article, “In Grim Rape Statistics, Signs of Progress,” which examines the narrative behind statistics that illustrate rising instances of violence throughout the city.

    Despite increases of reported violent crime, many working in both law enforcement and those ministering to rape survivors attribute the increases to an uptick in the reporting of the crimes.

    “The public is becoming much more confident and comfortable reporting sexual assault,” Smith said. “If the hospitals are doing better, if the Police Department is doing better, if the press, which has so extensively covered sexual assault this year, is doing better, you are going to see more people come forward.”
