06.09.15 Brooklyn Law School Celebrates 114th Commencement
    Commencement 2015

At the Brooklyn Law School 114th commencement ceremony May 28 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, U.S. Senator Charles “Chuck” Schumer told the 337 J.D. and 21 L.L.M. graduates that their new Brooklyn Law School degree meant one thing: “Now is the time to figure out what your dream is, and then reach high for it. See if you can achieve it. Then reach deep down inside yourselves, see what you’re made of, see if you can achieve that dream.”

Schumer’s advice to the class of 2015? “Very simple: go for it.”

“Sometimes we make the wrong choice,” he said. “But if my experience is any indication, you’ll pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move forward.”

President and Dean Nicholas Allard urged graduates to become “the architects of sustained economic opportunity, the peace makers, at home and abroad, building bridges over chasms of differences no matter how wide or deep, and you will be the defenders of equal justice for all under the rule of law.”

“You are prepared to become the next generation of guardians who protect and advance our democratic republic,” Allard said.

Allard also recognized Professors Michael Cahill and Dana Brakman Reiser, who are both stepping down as deans to return to the faculty full time, as well as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Hank Haverstick and Acting Dean of Admissions Myron Chaitovsky, who are both retiring after a combined 70 years of service to the Law School. He also gave special thanks to Professor Ursula Bentele, who will be leaving Brooklyn Law School to become Attorney Emeritus at the Legal Aid Society.

Stuart Subotnick '68, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, presided over the ceremony and led the conferring of degrees, including the honorary degree to Senator Schumer. Valedictorian Lena E. Smith ’15 and Robert D. Argen ’15 addressed their fellow graduates at the ceremony.
