03.28.15 Professor Lisa Smith Receives Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition 2015 Anti-Violence Award

Professor Lisa Smith has been honored with the Women of Courage Award from the Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition (BAVC) for her dedication to ending violence against women and children.  She received the Women of Courage Award at the BVAC Awards Luncheon at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Brooklyn on March 28.

The award is given to women who have "dedicated themselves to serving their communities." Smith was chosen for her work in the special victims field via the Law School’s Prosecutors Clinic, which has over the years prosecuted hundreds of domestic violence cases.

“Professor Lisa Smith is a respected member of the legal community who has worked tirelessly on the very issues we work to address – child abuse and domestic violence,” said Bianca Robinson, Vice President of BAVC. “She is a renowned authority and a tremendous asset to the community who rightly deserves this praise.”

The Brooklyn Anti-Violence Coalition was founded in 2007 to honor the memory of Chanel Petro Nixon, an honor student from Bedford-Stuyvesant, who went missing in 2006 and was later found murdered in Crown Heights. The BAVC works to address all aspects of violence that affect the community: gun violence, gang violence, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse.
